How it works
When you're signed in, you'll find a page to list your policy numbers. Using the authority form you completed when you joined, we'll ask your provider to record Cleversquirrel as 'adviser' for any policy you list. This allows us to reclaim charges you may have paid for an adviser to help you with your policy, so we can donate them to your favourite charity. Around half of all policies include these charges, but we have to check every policy, because providers don't always make it obvious. The most important thing you should know is the terms and conditions of your policy remain completely unchanged.
If you have an adviser currently giving you help on any policy
Please do not list the policy details. That's because your adviser may be claiming these charges of offset the cost of providing you with help. They won't be very happy if that income is taken away from them and redirected to Cleversquirrel. If you're unsure whether your adviser is claiming any available charges, you should ask them, as not all advisers are authorised to claim this money.
Once we've checked with your provider
We'll let you know whether your policy includes charges that can be reclaimed. And if the answer is 'no', it's not necessarily bad news. You see, providers include charges that can be claimed by an adviser at various stages of the policy process. Here's a few examples of where additional money might be available:
- Annual policies: general insurance policies for buildings, contents, accident, sickness and redundancy when they renew each year
- Regular premiums: when you increase the amount you save in your pension
- Indexation options: if you top up your life cover in line with rises in inflation
- Lump sums: when you add single payments to your investments such as ISAs, Unit Trusts and Bonds
- Maturity: if you take up a replacement policy of any sort when yours has finished
- Retirement: when you purchase an annuity at the point you draw an income from your pension
Cleversquirrel receives whatever money is available. And that means more for your favourite charity.
You can switch your policies away from Cleversquirrel
Allowing Cleversquirrel to reclaim charges and donate them to charity is not a once-and-for-all-time move. If you'd like to switch away from Cleversquirrel to another adviser, simply sign his or her authority form. From then on, your new adviser will be eligible to any charges reclaims on policies you move, to offset the cost of services they'll provide you. We'd be pleased to help with the transfers, if you need it. It goes without saying your favourite charity will no longer receive donations from policies you switch away from Cleversquirrel.
